Troy Kotsur Becomes the First Deaf Man in Film History to Win an Academy Award

On Sunday night, Troy Kotsur, the star of "CODA," became the first Deaf man to win an Oscar when he won Best Supporting Actor.

Troy Michael Kotsur is a theatre, film, and television actor and director. He received a number of awards for his supporting role in the film CODA (2021), including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a Critics' Choice Movie Award.

For almost 20 years, Troy Kotsur has been acting and directing. He was born deaf and raised in Mesa, Arizona. He has had critically acclaimed performances in big films, a main role in a Tony Award-winning play on Broadway, and countless notable roles on television throughout his career.

His win was dedicated to the deaf community, CODA community, and disabled community. "This is our moment," he remarked.
